Test results with a named reviewer: order, add, review, release

A doctor orders a test, staff add what came back as text or a stored file, the named reviewing doctor records a review, and only then is the result released to the patient's portal. Every step is recorded with who did it. This is document handling with a trail, not a laboratory information system: no analyzer connection, and nothing is interpreted for you.

A patient's results tab: four orders in different stages — released to the patient, reviewed and ready to release, and one awaiting the doctor's review with its review button.

Who it serves and what it solves

  • Doctors who send patients to outside laboratories

Order the test from the patient's file or right after a visit, name the reviewing doctor (by default you) and keep the result, the review and the release in one place.

  • Reception who receives results on paper or as a photo

Upload the file to the patient, then add the result to the order with a written summary and the stored file. Reception can add the result but cannot review or release it.

  • Owners who fear a result reaching the wrong person too soon

Release is possible only for the assigned reviewing doctor, only after a review is recorded, and only once. The database itself refuses a release without a review.

  • Patients waiting for their results

The portal shows only results that the doctor has reviewed and released. A mother or guardian sees a child's results only if the clinic has recorded an explicit access grant that includes results.

A realistic day

  1. The doctor orders the test

On the patient's results tab, or after a visit, the doctor chooses the type, writes the test name, adds an optional clinical note and chooses the reviewing doctor. The order shows as ordered, no result yet.

  2. The result arrives and is added

If it is a file, someone uploads it to the patient first. On the order, press add the result, write the summary as the result says (no value is generated for you) and choose the stored file. The order now waits for review.

  3. The reviewer finds it

The reviewing doctor sees it on Today under results, or in the Results list with the filter waiting for my review. Until the review, the result can still be corrected, and each correction appears in the trail.

  4. The reviewer records the review

The doctor opens the record, adds an optional note and confirms having reviewed the result. Now the result can no longer be replaced.

  5. The reviewer releases it

After release the patient sees the result in the portal. This cannot be undone, and the page says so before the button.

Who does what

Reception
Adds the written result and attaches the stored file, and follows the Results list to see what is waiting on whom.
Practitioner
Orders tests. As the named reviewer, records the review and releases the result. The ordering doctor or the owner can name another reviewing doctor until the review is recorded.
Owner
Can reassign the reviewing doctor, sees every open order and reads the trail of each step.

What the product does today

  • Orders: only a doctor orders. The order has a type, a test name, an optional clinical note and a reviewing doctor, who must be an active doctor of the same clinic.

    Tests and results
  • Results: a written summary and/or a file already stored in the patient's file, which must belong to the same patient and clinic. Nothing is generated or read from the file for you.

  • Review and release: only the assigned reviewing doctor records the review and releases, in that order, and release happens once. The patient sees released results only.

  • The Results list shows the clinic's open orders by what they wait for: my review, a result, release, released to patients, or all open.

  • A trail: ordering, adding or replacing a result, assigning a reviewer, reviewing and releasing each write an audit record with who and when.

The stages a test goes through

The patient's results tab labels every order with its stage:

  • Ordered, no result yet.
  • Awaiting review: a result has been added.
  • Reviewed, not released to the patient.
  • Released to the patient: now visible in the portal.

Inside the product

Demonstration data: no real name, phone number or patient.

  • A patient's file on the Visits tab: past and upcoming visits in date order, each with status, doctor and branch, and a signed note under the completed visit.

Setting up and moving over

  • Results are switched on for solo practices, multi-doctor clinics and allied health by default. Make sure at least one active doctor exists, because only a doctor can be the reviewer.
  • Upload the result file to the patient first (PDF, PNG, JPG or WebP, up to 20 MB). It counts toward your plan's storage.
  • Agree who reviews what. The ordering doctor is the reviewer unless you choose another on the order.
  • Tell staff that release is final: after it, the patient sees the result and it cannot be taken back.

Limits worth knowing

  • It is not a laboratory information system. There are no sample or accession numbers, barcodes, collection tracking, analyzer connections, units and reference ranges per test, result versioning with validation rules, critical-result acknowledgement or quality control. A laboratory that needs these cannot run its day on DrOnlineIQ today; laboratories are in early access.
  • The order stays inside your clinic. It is not sent to any laboratory, and results are typed or attached by your staff, not received from a machine.
  • Nothing is flagged as normal or abnormal and nothing is interpreted. The reviewing doctor reads the result.
  • The portal shows the written summary and says that the original file is available from the clinic. The patient does not download the file from the portal.
  • Release makes the result visible in the portal; it does not send the result in a message.

Questions

Can it read results from our analyzer or from a PDF?

No. There is no analyzer or laboratory-system connection, and the product does not extract values from a file. Staff write the summary as the result says and may attach the stored file.

Who is allowed to release a result?

Only the reviewing doctor named on that order, and only after recording the review. Reception, the owner and other doctors cannot release it for them. The owner or the ordering doctor can change the reviewer before the review.

Can a result be corrected?

Until the review is recorded, yes: replacing the result is allowed and appears in the trail as a replacement. After the review it cannot be replaced.

How does the patient see it?

In the patient portal, under the released results. Portal sign-in sends a code on WhatsApp, which depends on the clinic's WhatsApp connection; that connection has not yet been tested against a live WhatsApp account. Staff can always read the result in the patient's file.

Can a diagnostic laboratory use this as its main system?

Not yet. It handles the order, result, review and release with a trail, which is useful, but it lacks the sample, analyzer, reference-range and quality-control functions a laboratory needs. See the page for diagnostic laboratories.
